Walk to Uganda

In 2015, St. Julian’s Primary School linked with Busiu Primary School in Uganda. Mr Mansfield and Mr Prewett visited Busiu Primary School and the pupils and staff at St. Julian’s Primary were able to raise enough money to buy valuable school equipment to give to Busiu Primary School pupils. The headteacher, Sam Walyaula, also visited us at St. Julian’s Primary school and we have been good friends ever since. Mr Walyaula has now been moved to Namunsi Primary School and Mr Mansfield will be visiting both Busiu Primary School and Namunsi Primary in Uganda this year. We would love to support the pupils at Busiu and Namunsi Primary School and will be fundraising throughout April and May.

It is 5848 miles from St. Julian’s Primary School (Newport) to Namunsi Primary School (Uganda). Most people walk a mile in 2000 steps. We’re going to work together as a school to try to walk from St. Julian’s Primary School to Namunsi Primary School; that’s a total of 11,696,000 steps! To make things more interesting, the pupils are going to race the staff to see who gets there first!

We have a bank of fitness trackers/step counters in school that a different class will wear each day until May 24th. We will add up their total number of steps each day and add them to a school spreadsheet to track our progress (you can see our progress below). If your child has a fitbit/step counter of their own, they can add their steps to our spreadsheet at the end of each day. Only steps earned in school time count towards our journey.

Pupils can collect a sponsorship form from their teacher if they would like to collect individual sponsorship. Alternatively, you can sponsor us via our Just Giving page here. The money we raise will go towards school supplies, sports equipment and musical instruments for Busiu Primary School and Namunsi Primary School. We would also love to sponsor a number of children and buy them the equipment and uniform they need to be able to attend school.
