Peripatetic Music Lessons

At St. Julian’s Primary School, we are proud to work in partnership with Gwent Music to provide high-quality instrumental and vocal tuition for our pupils. Gwent Music is the Local Authority Music Service for Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire and Torfaen, delivering specialist music education to thousands of children across the region each week.

Peripatetic music lessons take place during the school day and are delivered by experienced specialist music tutors. Lessons are currently available on woodwind and guitars for pupils from Years 3-6. The music service often performs demonstration sessions for children in assembly for children to consider if they’d like to start lessons. Tuition may be provided individually or in small groups, depending on availability and the instrument being studied.

Learning a musical instrument offers many benefits beyond developing musical skills. It helps children to build confidence, concentration, resilience and self-discipline, while also encouraging creativity, teamwork and a lifelong appreciation of music. Many pupils also have opportunities to work towards nationally recognised music examinations, join local ensembles and orchestras, and perform in concerts throughout the year.

Parents who wish their child to begin music lessons can enrol directly through the Gwent Music Parent Portal. Tuition is provided over 34 lessons during the academic year, with fees payable either termly or monthly. In some cases, instruments may be available to borrow, subject to availability.

For further information about the range of instruments available, lesson fees or how to enrol, please visit the Gwent Music website or speak to the school office, who will be happy to direct you to the appropriate information.
