Young Carers at St Julian’s Primary School

At St Julian’s Primary School, we recognise that some of our pupils take on important responsibilities at home to help care for a family member. These pupils are known as young carers.

A young carer is a child or young person who helps to look after someone in their family who may have an illness, disability, mental health need, or struggles with substance misuse. This might include helping with practical tasks, providing emotional support, or helping to care for siblings. While many young carers show incredible maturity, kindness and resilience, we understand that these responsibilities can sometimes impact their wellbeing, attendance, or learning.

How We Support Young Carers

We are committed to ensuring that all young carers in our school feel supported, understood and able to thrive. Support available in school may include:

  • A named member of staff who children can talk to

  • Regular check-ins to support wellbeing

  • Access to pastoral and emotional support

  • Flexibility with homework or routines where needed

  • Opportunities to take part in young carer groups or activities in school

  • Support with attendance and communication between home and school

  • Signposting to external support services where appropriate

We also aim to create a safe and nurturing environment where young carers feel recognised and valued, and where their voices are heard.
