Year 3 Autumn A Update 2026

What an exciting and action-packed start to the school year we’ve had in Year 3! We have travelled back in time to explore life in Iron Age Wales, enjoyed two fantastic trips and developed our skills across the curriculum. The children have shown curiosity, creativity and determination in everything they have done.

πŸ›– Building Celtic Roundhouses

Our theme took us back to the time of the Celts. We explored what people needed to keep warm, safe and dry, and discovered more about everyday life during the Iron Age.

The children became builders as they designed and constructed their own Celtic roundhouses. They used measuring skills to prepare the materials, carefully used saws to cut the wood and hammers to put the structures together. They then used weaving skills to complete their roundhouses. It was wonderful to see their patience and resilience as their designs took shape!

Once the roundhouses were ready, we became estate agents. The children created adverts to sell their Celtic homes, filmed them using green screens and edited their videos using iMovie. We were so impressed by their creativity and confidence on camera!

πŸ›οΈ A Wonderful Visit to St Fagans

Our visit to St Fagans helped bring our Celtic learning to life. The children took part in a Celtic Roundhouse workshop, experienced what life was like as Celts and discovered how people lived during the Iron Age.

We used our visit as inspiration for research and persuasive leaflets about St Fagans. We also developed our mapping and digital skills by planning routes and using Spheros to follow them.

🏺 Exploring Roman Caerleon

We had a fantastic time on our visit to Roman Caerleon. The children took part in a medicine workshop and visited the amphitheatre, barracks and museum.

The trip gave us a brilliant opportunity to explore Roman life and think about the differences between the Romans and the Celts. Back in class, we shared our reflections and began learning about Boudicca and the Romans.

✍️ Literacy Adventures

Our Literacy learning has taken us from stories with Woolly Wendy to imagining life in the Iron Age. The children created story maps, explored adjectives and practised writing effective sentence openers.

We also planned diary entries about the general life of a Celtic girl. The children thought about what she might see, hear and smell, using their ideas to bring her experiences to life in their writing.

πŸ”¬ Super Scientists – Exploring Sound

In Science, we learned about sound and our ears. We explored how we hear sounds and planned an investigation into how different materials affect the volume of sound.

The children shared predictions, tested their ideas and discussed what they noticed. Their curiosity helped make this a really engaging investigation!

βž• Marvellous Mathematicians

In Maths, we have been building our confidence with numbers and practical problem-solving. The children practised using number lines, exploring place value, estimating and measuring lengths, and choosing suitable metric units.

We also worked on adding and subtracting using partitioning and applied our skills to solve word problems. It has been lovely to see the children growing in confidence as they explain their thinking and try different strategies.

🎨 Creative Learning and More

Our Celtic theme inspired some beautiful artwork, including Celtic knots. We also enjoyed Welsh learning and took part in our Harvest Festival.

In PE, we challenged ourselves through fitness circuits. We also enjoyed Gateway Rugby sessions in 3SD, delivered by Dragons RFC.

The children took part in Show Racism the Red Card activities and continued to share their ideas through Pupil Parliament.

🌟 What a Wonderful Start to Year 3!

We are so proud of the enthusiasm, creativity and resilience the children have shown this half term. From measuring, sawing and weaving roundhouses to exploring Roman Caerleon, it has been full of memorable learning experiences.

Well done, Year 3! We can’t wait for our next learning adventures!
