Reception Spring A Update

What a wonderful start to the year we have had in Reception! Our Spring A topic, “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” has sparked curiosity, creativity, and plenty of “wow” moments in the classroom.

We began our learning by exploring the fascinating world of light and dark. The children loved investigating how light helps us to see and what happens when darkness falls. This naturally led us to learn about day and night, where we discovered why the sky changes and how our routines differ depending on the time of day.

Our young learners were especially intrigued by nocturnal and diurnal animals. There were lots of gasps of surprise when the children found out that while they are tucked up in bed, some animals are just waking up for their busy night ahead! Meanwhile, others spend their days hunting, playing, and exploring—just like us.

We also dipped our toes into the exciting world of electricity, thinking about where light comes from and how it brightens our homes and school. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed fantastic curiosity as they made connections to their everyday lives.

One of the highlights of the term was a special visit from a talented guest who taught us how to create shadow puppets. The classroom was filled with laughter as familiar shapes appeared on the wall, and the children experimented with telling their own shadow stories. It was a magical experience that truly brought our learning to life.

It has certainly been an artistic term in Reception! We explored shades of colour and became real paint experts, discovering what happens when you add white to make colours lighter or black to make them darker. The children embraced their inner artists and were so proud of their creations.

Inspired by the renowned artist David Hockney, we even recreated a dramatic piece of stormy artwork. The children used bold brushstrokes and expressive colours to capture the energy and movement of a storm—each piece as unique and imaginative as its creator.

To round off our topic in style, the children worked together to film their very own news report! With growing confidence, they spoke clearly, shared their knowledge, and shone in front of the camera. It was a fantastic way to celebrate everything they have learned.

We are incredibly proud of how much the children have grown this term. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to try new things have made Spring A truly bright and beautiful in every way.

We can’t wait to see what next term brings!
