On Wednesday 25th March, our SJPS football team travelled to Newport Velodrome to take part in an exciting and action-packed tournament. The event brought together 25 schools and over 300 boys and girls from across Newport, creating an incredible atmosphere of competition, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
The day certainly kept everyone on their toes—not just because of the football! We experienced a bit of everything weather-wise, from bright sunshine to rain, strong winds, and even bursts of hail. Despite these ever-changing conditions, the team remained focused, resilient, and full of spirit throughout.
SJPS played an impressive total of eight matches against a range of strong opponents: St Mary’s Primary, Bro Teyrnon Primary, Rogerstone Primary, St Andrews Primary, Maindee Primary, Glasllwch Primary, High Cross Primary, and Milton Primary. Each game showcased the team’s determination, skill, and growing confidence on the pitch.
One of the standout moments of the day came during a thrilling passage of play. Adam struck a powerful shot that was brilliantly saved by the Rogerstone goalkeeper, who managed to push the ball clear. Undeterred, Adam quickly followed up with another attempt, which was cleverly flicked on by Oscar. Then, in a moment of pure brilliance, Harrison executed an incredible acrobatic bicycle kick, sending the ball flying into the back of the net and sparking jubilant celebrations from the team.
Throughout the tournament, every player contributed with enthusiasm and teamwork, representing SJPS with pride. Their effort, attitude, and sportsmanship did not go unnoticed, and both Mr Jones and Mr Milner were extremely proud of their overall performance.
Well done to the entire SJPS team for a fantastic day of football—you did the school proud!
