What a wonderful term we have had settling into 2026! Kicking off with our exciting new theme, ‘Adventurers and Explorers’, we have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about famous explorers and their expeditions around the world.
🌍 Theme – Adventurers and Explorers
This term, we have researched a wide range of explorers, from Amy Johnson to Ernest Shackleton, and plotted their incredible journeys on a timeline to see where they fit in history. We each chose an adventurer to research in depth and wrote detailed biographies about their lives and achievements.
We also used our computing skills to collate our research and create databases about a variety of explorers, organising key facts and information carefully.
One of our favourite parts of the topic was learning about Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition on the Endurance. We stepped into the shoes of Perce Blackborow, the stowaway from Newport, and created diary entries imagining what life would have been like on the perilous journey through the icy Antarctic. Our writing and acting was full of drama, description and emotion!

❄️ S.T.E.M – Polar Regions
In STEM, we explored the fascinating Polar Regions, learning about the differences between the Arctic and Antarctic, including their climates and wildlife.
We carried out an exciting insulation experiment to investigate which materials were best at keeping heat in — just like explorers would need to know when surviving in freezing conditions! We tested different materials carefully and recorded our results like real scientists.

Live Lesson
We were thrilled to take part in a live lesson with Steve Backshall! It was an inspiring experience, and we loved hearing about real-life adventures and the importance of exploration and conservation. We also had a live lesson with a real life Arctic explorer, her stories were amazing and inspiring to hear!
👩🍳 Cooking and Nutrition
We have also had great fun in the kitchen this term! We baked delicious biscuits for St Dwynwen’s Day, made tasty energy snacks, and completed our exciting smoothie project. We learnt about healthy ingredients, food preparation and kitchen safety — and enjoyed tasting our creations too!

We are extremely excited to continue our Adventurers and Explorers theme next term. We are especially looking forward to creating our Ernest Shackleton Lego stop-motion projects, bringing his incredible journey to life in a whole new way!
What another fantastic term in Year 4 — we can’t wait for what’s next! ✨
