Year 1 Summer A Update

We have been really enjoying our focus on ‘Where We Belong’ and exploring our local community and Newport!

At the start of the term we went on a bus trip around Newport to explore the landmarks around us. We observed their features, locations and in the following weeks we completed observational drawings, fact files & clay landmarks. We saw Tredegar House, the Transporter Bridge, the Roman Amphitheatre, The Wave & Newport Castle.

We have been practicing very hard ahead of our sports day and did absolutely amazing on the day. We put 100% into every race, persevered and had a fun afternoon supported by our cheering friends & families.

We were very lucky to have a video call from a local builder, Jake, who answered all of our questions about building houses. We were very engaged and interested in his job. Prior to the video call, we thought of the questions we would like to ask him. They were such sensible questions and we listened really well.

We went on a walk around our local community with our class and identified different houses in the area. We found lots of flats, semi-detached houses, terraced houses, bungalows & detached houses. Some of us even remembered how to say the houses in Welsh!

In our final week we completed a road safety campaign. We have been learning about the dangers of not being safe on the road, how we can stay safe along the road & how we can raise awareness to others. We made road safety posters and completed road safety role play tasks. We also stood outside our school to identify how many different types of transport go past in a short space of time.

In our mathematics & numeracy activities, we have been learning how to tell the time, focusing on o’clock and half past & understanding place value. We used the clocks to show the correct times & drew the hands on the clock and put our place value knowledge to the test with a quick fire place value quiz.

In literacy we have been learning about poems and words that rhyme. We then created our own acrostic poem all about Newport.

We welcomed 5 caterpillars per class before half term and were so excited to see the process of their life cycle. We voted to give them names & checked in daily to see what was happening.

We have had lots of fun in such a short half term and are so excited for new and exciting opportunities when we return to school.
