Year 1 Summer B Update

WOW! What a fantastic year we have had in Year One! We cannot believe that we are at the end of the academic year already! We have been so busy throughout our final term. Let’s see what we have been getting up to…

To welcome us back into the new term, we spent a sunny & exciting day on the field participating in lots of different ‘healthy living’ activities. County in the Community helped us learn about a balanced diet, we tasted delicious smoothies, tried our luck at inflatable penalty shootout, Angus O’Brein from Gwent Dragons taught us a game using rugby techniques, we used our team working skills, listening ears & most importantly, we had a lot of fun. We also completed a giant obstacle course (this was definitely a firm favourite!) It was a great day and helped us to really understand the importance of staying active & healthy.

We blew our teachers and our families away during our ‘Creative Festival’. We all worked very hard to perform a song from our chosen musicals. We sang & danced in front of a very large audience and did such a great job. Our teachers were VERY proud. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and got to watch everyone else perform their creative pieces to their families too! The weather was beautiful and the day went brilliantly.

We had 3 very proud teachers after the ‘St Julian’s Primary School Talent Show’. It was wonderful to see so many year one pupils confidently participating in a talent show in front of an audience so big. From dancing to singing, piano playing to a violinist, they were all outstanding.

We excitedly awaited the arrival of our butterflies on two occasions this term! We watched them go from caterpillars, to building their cocoons and waited longingly for them to emerge. When they finally did and they were ready, we released them outside and it was a magical experience.

Our topic this term has been ‘O Dan Y Mor’ – a perfect topic for this summer term, all about under the sea, sea creatures, the seaside & pirates (Ahoy there!).

We delved into fact files about different sea creatures and created informative fact file booklets about the different creatures you may find lurking in the deep, blue sea, we designed and created lighthouse models, crated our own rock pools, retold the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and made yummy beach cups to sell at the hatch.  Our teachers brought real fish in for observational drawings & Miss Parkinson brought in Carl the Crab to make our lesson authentic! A big thank you to Mrs Rue for helping us complete an art project inspired by artist Sarah Kay. We explored ink, drew very detailed seagulls and added a touch of sand to our art. We cannot wait to see them on a display!

Our end of year trip was a blast! We headed off with our bucket and spades and drove towards the smell of the salty sea and sound of squeaking seagulls. Barry Island here we come! We had a wonderful day building sandcastles, flying kites & eating our sandwiches (rather quickly before the cheeky seagulls pinched them!)

To end the year and our theme, we invited our families to our ‘Pirate training academy’ day. Do you think you’ve got what it takes to be a pirate? Families we’re encouraged to programme the beebots to the treasure, build ships out of recycled materials and test if it would sink or float, create their own pirate hats (to make sure they looked the part), trust each other whilst walking the plank & listening to directions…blindfolded!! And finally, completing a treasure hunt to retrieve the delicious, sweet treasure. We performed a pirate song and everyone successfully completed the training academy.

We have managed to do so much in this term and it has been so much fun.

As the teachers said goodbye, there was a sense of pride as we watched our Year One pupils leave for the last time, before returning as big Year Two pupils in September! They have been a pleasure to teach and we will miss them all being in our classes.

We are so excited to see them next year and hear how they are getting on in their new classes.

Well done Year One and thank you for a fantastic year.
