Year 2 Blog Post – Soaring High and Diving Deep
This term in Year 2, our learning has taken flight with our exciting topic, “Soaring High and Diving Deep.” We have been exploring the fascinating world of birds and animals that live in the sky and water, discovering how they move, survive, and adapt to their environments.
One of our highlights was taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, organised by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The children became real wildlife explorers as they carefully observed and counted the birds visiting our school grounds. We spotted a range of species and talked about how gardens and outdoor spaces can help protect wildlife. The children showed fantastic patience and observation skills, and they loved contributing to a nationwide project.

We were also very lucky to welcome visitors from Falconry UK, who brought along some magnificent birds of prey. This was an unforgettable experience for the children, who were amazed to see these powerful birds up close. We learned about how falcons, owls, and hawks hunt, how their wings help them soar, and why conservation is so important. The children asked brilliant questions and demonstrated how much they had already learned through our topic work.

Another very special moment this term has been watching our own chicks hatch in school. The children have been fascinated by the life cycle process, from eggs to fluffy chicks. They have shown such care and responsibility, speaking quietly around them and observing how they grow each day. This hands-on experience has helped bring our science learning to life and has encouraged lots of thoughtful discussion about how animals need warmth, food, and protection to survive.
Across the term, the children have also been writing bird fact files, creating artwork inspired by feathers and wings, and learning about habitats around the world. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity grow and their confidence soar. We finished this half term off with a fantastic visit to Slimbridge!
We are incredibly proud of how enthusiastic Year 2 have been in their learning. Their excitement, thoughtful questions, and kindness towards animals have made this topic truly special.
We can’t wait to see where our learning takes us next!
