Another fantastic term for our Year 5 learners! From exploring Welsh culture to investigating the wonders of the ocean, pupils have taken part in an exciting range of activities that have developed their knowledge and skills across a variety of subjects. Here’s a glimpse into what we have been up to:
We began the half term with our very own Eisteddfod, celebrating Welsh culture, language and creativity. Pupils showcased their talents through dance, storytelling and art, while also learning about the significance of this traditional festival. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm, with so many fantastic performances and creative pieces on display.
A highlight of the term was our educational visit to Cardiff Bay. Pupils became inquisitive researchers, interviewing members of the public as part of their learning. They also enjoyed a scenic boat tour around the bay and had the unique opportunity to step inside the Senedd, where they learned more about how decisions are made in Wales.
Our learning about marine mammals sparked thoughtful discussion, culminating in a class debate on whether marine mammals should be kept in captivity. Pupils demonstrated excellent speaking and listening skills, presenting balanced and well-reasoned arguments.
We were also lucky to take part in a cooking workshop led by Jen from Cooking Together Wales. In the cooking suite, pupils learned how to make rainbow couscous and cream cheese fruit pots. They then used the Mac Suite to design and create their own recipe cards, combining their culinary skills with their digital creativity.
In addition, pupils took part in an important workshop focused on understanding emotions. They discussed why we sometimes ‘flip our lids’ and explored strategies to help manage these feelings effectively.
As part of our STEM learning, pupils explored whether age and height are correlated, linking this to their research on how sharks grow. This hands-on investigation encouraged curiosity, data handling and critical thinking. Finally, our ‘Ask a Scientist’ workshop, led by our partner from the Schools Across the Ocean programme, gave pupils the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions, explore new ideas and think more deeply about the world around them. It was inspiring to see their curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific learning.
It has truly been a term filled with creativity, discovery and hands-on experiences. Well done to all our Year 5 pupils for their enthusiasm and hard work!
