A huge thank you to our parents and carers for your continued support throughout the term. We’re incredibly proud of everything Year 5 has achieved and can’t wait to see what next term brings!

What a whirlwind of a term it’s been!
This term has flown by, and what an exciting journey we’ve had in Year 5. Our theme, “Cracking Ideas,” launched our pupils into the dynamic world of entrepreneurship. They’ve explored what it takes to start and run a business — from brainstorming innovative ideas to developing business plans and preparing to pitch their products to the Dragons in the hopes of securing investment. The best is yet to come as children busily prepare for the eco festival after half term. Our budding entrepreneurs have already shown remarkable creativity, confidence, and teamwork — we can’t wait for them to put it all into practice in a couple of weeks!
In a thought-provoking enquiry, pupils investigated the real and relevant issue of food waste within our school. After collecting data and exploring solutions, they created impactful infographics to present their findings and raise awareness in our school community.
Mathematics has been equally hands-on and practical. Pupils deepened their understanding of measurement, exploring length, perimeter, area, and volume through outdoor learning and real-life scenarios. From working out discounts in a mock shopping task to calculating ingredient fractions in recipes, our learners applied their skills in meaningful and memorable ways — boosting both competence and confidence.
This term’s Discover and Do sessions added even more excitement and creativity to our week. Pupils used Tinkercad to design imaginative inventions addressing real-world problems, crafted sustainable products using salt dough, and delved into environmental science by creating a class wormery and examining its fascinating contents under the microscope.
As part of our outdoor learning focus, children also had the opportunity to learn more about the trees in our local area. We explored the school grounds to observe the shapes and sizes of leaves, using a leaf identifier to discover the names of different trees. Pupils then applied their numeracy skills outdoors by measuring the trunk circumference and calculating an estimate of each tree’s age — a fantastic way to combine science and maths in a real-world setting.
In addition, pupils took part in an interactive assembly and classroom workshop with Welsh Water, where they learnt about the importance of saving water and how we can all do our bit to conserve it at home. Children left the workshop with a greater appreciation of what it takes to get fresh water into our homes and why it’s vital that we all work together to avoid wasting this precious resource.
We’ve also made the most of the lovely weather by getting outside and practising our sports day events. The children have been enthusiastically sprinting, skipping, jumping, and throwing javelins as they prepare for our exciting summer sports event. It’s been wonderful to see their energy, effort, and team spirit shine through in every session!
To round off a jam-packed term, we also welcomed the fire service into school for a fire safety talk. This engaging session provided children with essential knowledge on how to stay safe in emergencies — a fitting and informative end to an incredible term.
To top it all off, we ended the term on a spectacular high with our trip to Birmingham to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The children were blown away by the vibrant colours, energetic dancing, and brilliant singing — and their excellent behaviour made us all proud.
