Thank you to everyone for their continued support as we approach the last half term ever in Primary School for our amazing Year 6 children. This term, we have been learning about our exciting new theme: “Tomorrow’s World.” Through a wide range of activities and workshops, children have been discovering what the future might hold—from advancements in technology to environmental sustainability and innovations in transport. Here’s a look at some of the fantastic learning that’s been taking place:

Real-World Science: Traffic Investigation and Air Quality

As part of our theme, children carried out a Traffic Investigation Survey by walking to the nearby motorway bridge. Equipped with Micro:bits used as data loggers, they recorded and analysed the flow and types of vehicles during busy periods. This hands-on research led to insightful discussions about pollution, carbon emissions, and transport habits.

The study extended to investigating the Brynglas Tunnels—why is the speed limit set at 50mph? Children explored how reducing speed can help lower air pollution and improve road safety. They also looked into the environmental effects of traffic congestion and the importance of monitoring air quality in our local area.

STEM Enrichment: Engineering the Future

All three classes had the opportunity to take part in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (STEM Cymru), where they joined a fascinating semiconductor workshop. Using Snap Circuits and Circuit Explorers, they learnt how electronic components power everyday technology—from solar panels to smartphones. This workshop sparked a great deal of interest and provided a glimpse into the future of electronics.

We also participated in the Factory of the Future online STEM workshop. Children explored how industries are changing through automation, robotics, and smart systems. The session inspired critical thinking about the future of work and the skills needed in tomorrow’s job market.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

A huge thank you to one of our school parents who kindly led a first aid workshop for several groups of children. This invaluable session gave children the chance to learn practical, life-saving skills—an important part of becoming a responsible and prepared member of society.

Meanwhile, the school is buzzing with anticipation for our summer concert. Auditions for “Matilda” have taken place, revealing a host of talented singers, dancers and actors ready to take centre stage.

Debating the Future: A Balanced Argument

In Literacy, children tackled a thought-provoking question: “Should petrol and diesel cars be banned?” They developed balanced arguments, exploring the environmental benefits of electric vehicles alongside the challenges of making the switch. This work not only enhanced persuasive writing skills but also deepened their understanding of climate change and innovation.

Discover and Do: Tomorrow’s Creators at Work

In our hands-on “Discover and Do” sessions, children have been creating, experimenting and innovating:

  • Racing solar-powered cars across the playground
  • Assembling a functioning model of a bionic hand
  • Designing vibrant futuristic cityscapes through art
  • Using GarageBand to compose Caribbean-inspired music
  • Constructing and testing a wind turbine to generate clean energy

Each activity encouraged teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving—essential skills for future inventors and leaders. From budding engineers and scientists to future musicians and designers, every child has shown that preparing for tomorrow starts with learning today.
