Over the past few weeks, Year 6 has embarked on an incredible journey through the 1940s. By diving into the history of World War 2 through immersive activities and hands-on learning, the children have truly brought the past to life. It has been a memorable experience for everyone involved!
🏰 History in the Heart of Cardiff
Our adventure began with a fascinating trip to Cardiff Castle. We ventured deep into the underground air-raid shelters to discover how citizens sought safety during the Blitz. Sitting in those dark, narrow tunnels, listening to the wail of sirens and the echo of distant explosions, the children were able to empathise with the bravery of those who lived through the war. It was a sobering yet captivating experience that no textbook could ever replicate.
📦 A Living Museum in the Classroom
A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who sent in WW2 artefacts and family history. Our classrooms has felt like a museum! We’ve been privileged to see:
- Original ration books and military memorabilia.
- Moving photographs of relatives who served.
- Personal stories that have made our history lessons feel deeply personal and relevant.
🛠️ “Make Do and Mend” & STEM
The children haven’t just been reading about the war; they’ve been living the “Make Do and Mend” philosophy.
- Textiles: We’ve picked up needles and thread to learn the essential art of sewing.
- Construction: Using a chop saw, the children have been busily recreating Anderson shelters.
- Aerodynamics: We’ve been investigating wing shapes and spans with paper aeroplanes to see how design affects flight time.
- Enquiry: Pupils have led their own independent research, following their curiosity to answer complex questions about the conflict.
🌐 Digital Citizens: AI and Safety
In honour of Safer Internet Day, we took a forward-looking turn to discuss Artificial Intelligence (AI). The children debated the pros and cons of this new technology, while reinforcing the vital habits of staying safe online, managing screen time, and protecting their mental well-being in a digital world.
🎭 Inspiration and the Eisteddfod
We were delighted to watch a live performance of Bugsy Malone at St. Julian’s High School. Seeing our former pupils shine on stage was a proud moment for us all, and it has certainly sparked some early inspiration for our own end-of-year show!
To finish the term on a high, we are busy preparing our Eisteddfod entries. From emotive poetry to stunning artwork, the children are eager to earn points for their Houses.
A special request: We would love to see as many entries as possible for the D&T competition, where children are challenged to design and build their very own WWII air-raid shelters!
We look forward to continuing our theme after the break. We wish you all a safe, restful, and very happy half term.
