Digital Heroes Celebration Event

On Wednesday 20th March, two of our Digital Heroes attended the Digital Hero celebration event at St. Fagan’s National History Museum, Cardiff.

The event brought together a range of people from schools, community projects, housing associations, charities and volunteers to share their work to promote digital inclusion across Wales. Digital Communities Wales is a Welsh Government initiative to train people to help others in their community develop their digital skills and get online. DIgital Heroes is a scheme that children and young people can get involved with to help DIgital Communities Wales achieve their goal. Did you know that 15% of people in Wales are not online or using digital technology!

As part of the celebration, Digital Heroes from schools all over Wales were asked to share their story and the projects that they have been working on in their communities. Our two Digital Heroes did such a fantastic job at sharing our Glyn Anwen project, they spoke clearly and confidently. Each week 7 of our Digital Heroes visit Glyn Anwen, a local residential home to teach them digital skills and support them in using their own devices. From taking ‘selfies’ to searching the internet safely and creating strong passwords- our Digital Heroes cover a range of topics. Each Hero is paired up with a resident with whom they work with each week, they have built fantastic relationships with each other and really enjoy working with together. We loved hearing about how other schools all over Wales help people get online and how other organisations are doing similar work.

We listened to a panel of experts and asked them questions about the future of digital inclusion and how we can all continue to make an impact in our communities. Some really interesting information! We loved hearing from Tom, a 92 year old gentleman from a care home whose life has been improved through the Digital Heroes scheme, it also made us very proud of the work we do!
Our next aim as part of our project is to try and fundraise to purchase a tablet for the residents of Glyn Anwen to share and use! We will soon find out the result of the National Digital Heroes competition, thank to everyone who has voted for us and supported us! Fingers crossed!
