Year 1 Spring B Update

We have had a lovely second half to the Spring Term, developing new skills and having so much fun!

We started Spring B by celebrating Welsh week. We have learnt about St David and celebrated Cymru a Fi by exploring the history of Prince Llewellyn. We also created beautiful watercolour paintings of Welsh dragons in the style of Rhiannon Roberts, who created a YouTube video tutorial for us to help with our painting! We celebrated our Eisteddfod altogether, celebrating our fantastic artwork, other children’s learning, as well as singing traditional Welsh songs. We also ended the week by baking Bara Brith and sold it in the Hatch!

Not only this, we also had an incredible day for our Immersion Day…we went to Dragon School! As part of our exploration of the story Zog and just like Zog, Year 1 received a star chart to add a star after every lesson and celebrated their success with a certificate ceremony at the end of the day. During the day, Year 1 learnt to fly, roar, sort and handle data, print and more! It was an amazing day! We also created stop motions using Zog characters that we created out of plasticine.

As part of our science week, we had a visitor show us how science can be exciting, interesting and pose many questions…we had Mad Science come to visit to show us how to make potions! Not only this, we explored what happens when dry ice is mixed with water and soap, what happens when you light flash paper and many more cool experiments that we enjoyed. During this week, we also cooked Gruffalo Crumble! We had a go at making this independently too! We investigated our own inquiry; we wanted to know how sugar effects our teeth. We conducted an experiment where we placed eggs into different liquids to test how much sugar is in different liquids. We were surprised to find that orange juice has sugar and vinegar made the egg shell really soft!

UpBeat came to visit us and taught us different songs and rhythms to play on the bongo drums, we really enjoyed this experience and learnt how to keep a beat, keep in time and repeat rhythms! Music has been experienced in Year 1 through song too, we have learnt Julia Donaldson’s songs from her Treasury of Songs! We have listened to songs relating to Stickman, The Smartest Giant in Town, Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo.

As part of our express, we ended our spring term topic Julia Donaldson by presenting an assembly to the rest of the Foundation Phase. We told Reception and Year 2 a fact about Julia Donaldson, shared some of our learning experiences and we performed the songs Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo from the Treasury of Songs.

What a Spring term we have had! All the Year 1 team wish everyone a happy 2 week break and we look forward to seeing you in the summer term!
