Year 2 Spring A Update

Year 2 have had a wonderful and busy Spring Term so far! We have been learning all about garden birds and have really enjoyed bird watching in the school grounds. We made a tally chart of the birds we spotted and then made a block graph to present our findings. We saw lots of blackbirds, magpies and seagulls. The children also made bird feeders using lard and bird seed to hang on trees in our school grounds so we could try to attract even more beautiful birds! We also loved watching RSPB’s Live Big School Birdwatch special where we learnt lots of the names of birds in our local areas and how to look after them.

At the beginning of the term, we were lucky to have a visit from Falconry UK where we met some gorgeous owls, a kookaburra and a falcon! All of the children were so sensible and listened very carefully to the facts about the birds. Everyone had a chance to hold the birds as well! It was so much fun getting to know these special birds and even getting to meet them too.

For the last fortnight, Year 2 have had a very exciting living eggs experience where the children have learnt to care for some eggs. They began to crack very quickly and by day 2 we had 4 chicks already! Throughout the day we were lucky enough to see more of the eggs hatch! We were amazing at being quiet so we didn’t scare the new chicks. The children have loved watching them grow and making sure they have enough water and food in their brooder box. We adored having a little hold and a cuddle with them too!

In the final week of the Spring A term we went on a brilliant trip to Slimbridge Wetlands Centre in Gloucestershire. Luckily the rain held off for us and we saw a huge variety of birds including flamingos, geese, swans, ducks and moorhens. We loved seeing the swans flying and landing in the water!

Have a great break and we look forward to seeing everyone after half term where we have lots of lovely things planned.
