Year 4 Spring B update

What a brilliant half term we have had! We have continued learning about famous explorers and their expeditions around the world in our theme, ‘Adventurers and Explorers’.

The children have learnt a lot about Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to Antarctica in the legendary ship, the Endurance. They worked collaboratively to create Lego masterpieces using the StopMotion app by firstly creating their own story map, then taking freeze-frame photographs and finally narrating over the top. I’m sure you’ll agree, they are outstanding! Over the past few years, the Endurance ship has been discovered 3000m down at the bottom of the Weddell Sea. We learnt how scientists and explorers planned to research the wreck and were inspired to write our own ‘brag’ letter to persuade the team to hire us to join the crew!

Eisteddfod

There have been so many celebrations that we’ve enjoyed taking part in this half term! We started off by celebrating our school Eisteddfod and really enjoyed entering all the different competitions. Children were able to showcase a range of their skills from singing and dancing to writing and D&T.

World Book Day

World Book Day 2025 inspired us to get dressing up and reading our favourite stories! We were able to join a live lesson provided by the experts at Pobble 365 and got our creative juices flowing by writing a short, creative piece with an explosive and dynamic vocabulary.

Immersion day

The climbing wall came to town on our ‘Adventurers and Explorers’ day and we had a blast being ambitious and facing our fears scaling the dizzy heights of the craggy wall! What a view from up there! Children were able to experience the thrill and adrenaline some of these explorers might feel when on their expeditions.

During this day, we faced another challenge of rescuing one of our team who had ‘fallen’! The children had to complete an obstacle course dragging their injured party with them.

We finished off this half term looking at the threats faced by polar bears in the wild. We made our own polar bears from salt dough and then debated whether zoos were the right place to keep animals. There were lots of different opinions and we learnt how to debate our points of view.

We also learnt about the adventures of the explorer and presenter, Steve Backshall. Using atlases and Google Maps, we were able to find out about how many places he has visited around the world. We used our numeracy skills to create tables and graphs to depict this information.

In P.E, the children have been developing our orienteering skills by navigating obstacles, reading maps to find clues and solving a riddle, and, giving directional instructions like quarter turn clockwise. We have also created adventurous and expressive combat dances to dramatic music and enjoyed performing to the rest of the class!

We have certainly earned this Easter break! We wish you all a happy Easter and a restful 2 weeks 🙂
