Year 6: Lights, Camera, Action! 🎬✨
This term, Year 6 have been diving into the exciting world of cinema with our “Lights, Camera, Action!” theme. The children have explored the fascinating history of film, discovering how cinema has evolved from the earliest moving pictures to the digital masterpieces of today. They examined early films and even used the digital mapping tool Digimaps to locate movies filmed across Wales—a fun way to combine geography with their growing interest in the arts.
Our budding film critics and historians also engaged in lively debates about whether local councils should allow films to be shot in Wales, weighing the benefits and challenges of bringing the film industry into local communities.
Exploring Careers in Film 🎥
Year 6 have been inspired by the many careers the film industry offers. From directors and actors to special effects artists, children learned about the skills required for each role. A particular highlight was a visit from Jenna McDonnell, who demonstrated how to create realistic prosthetics on the arm—a hands-on experience that truly brought the magic of filmmaking to life! We are so grateful to Jenna for coming in and showcasing her amazing talents!
Literacy and Expressive Arts ✏️🎨
In Literacy, the children immersed themselves in the captivating story of Hugo Cabret, while in Expressive Arts, they studied the unique work of Brian Selznick, the author and illustrator of Hugo Cabret. Children explored how Selznick blends detailed illustrations with storytelling and even practised sketching eyes—a project that sharpened their observation and artistic skills.
Languages Through Fun 🎶💃
Our Spanish lessons continued online, where children learned through songs, dances, and games. This interactive approach helped them build confidence in speaking Spanish while having fun and staying engaged.
Crucial Crew Workshop 🚒🛡️
Year 6 also visited Raglan Barracks for the “Crucial Crew” workshop, where they received vital health and safety information. Through engaging activities with various organisations, the children learned how to stay safe in different situations—both physically and emotionally. This experience gave them essential skills for navigating the world confidently.
Overall, it has been an action-packed term for Year 6, full of creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning. The children have not only developed their knowledge of film and the arts but also built important life skills that will stay with them for years to come.
Lights, camera, action… and a round of applause for our incredible Year 6! We look forward to continuing with this theme and developing our creativity even more after half term🌟
