Year 6 Spring B Update

This term, our children have travelled through time, solved secret codes, baked like it’s the 1940s, and even met a robotic dog – all without leaving school grounds! From wartime experiences to futuristic technologies, it’s been a truly unforgettable few months of learning.

Life on the Home Front – WW2 Comes to Life

Our theme this term was War and Peace, and what a journey it’s been. We continued our learning with the Blitz – that relentless bombing campaign which left such a deep mark on British cities. Pupils stepped into the shoes of wartime reporters, crafting powerful newspaper articles on the impact of the Blitz, with a special focus on its effect on our very own Newport. Their writing captured both the devastation and the community spirit that shone through the darkness.

Next came Steam Train Evacuation – one of the most immersive days we’ve ever had! Each child sewed their teddy bear to take on the train journey, just like evacuees would have. We packed jam sandwiches and Anzac biscuits, ready for a long day of travel and discovery. Once at our destination, we threw ourselves into wartime activities and sang cheerful songs to keep morale high – just like real evacuees might have done. After returning ‘home’, the children wrote heartfelt letters from the perspective of an evacuee, filled with emotion and rich in historical detail. We also explored women’s roles during the war, uncovering their vital contributions – from Land Girls to codebreakers and factory workers. Speaking of codebreaking, we took our own turn at cracking secret messages using Microbits. We coded and deciphered hidden texts, combining digital literacy with historical intrigue. Alan Turing would be proud!

To wrap up this incredible topic, we invited families to our FACE VE Day event on Thursday, 10th April. It was a wonderful afternoon celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day with sandwiches, cakes, and lots of shared stories. Children proudly presented their books and spoke confidently about what they had learnt. They even designed their invitations and managed a budget for the event! To top it all off, we served up a spread of traditional WW2 recipes, lovingly cooked by the pupils themselves – including (very popular!) wartime carrot cookies and cheese and marmite swirls. https://vimeo.com/1074412146?share=copy#t=0

Beyond the Battlefield – Other Memorable Moments

This term wasn’t all about the 1940s, though. On World Book Day, we were thrilled to welcome author David Brayley, who led an inspiring workshop. Pupils penned their own sports-themed stories, many focusing on Welsh football star Ben Davies – showing off their creativity and storytelling flair.

We’ve also continued to prioritise wellbeing and kindness. Every class has taken part in Kidscape’s Bullying Champion training, which equips children with tools to stand up to bullying and support one another with confidence and empathy.

And just this week, we were lucky enough to host BAE Systems for an exciting Year 5/6 workshop: The Age of AI. We met their AI-powered robotic dog, who could describe her surroundings in amazing detail! We also explored the concept of ‘deep fakes’ and discussed the importance of critical thinking in our digital age – a fascinating look into the future of technology and the ethical challenges that come with it.
