Year 1 Summer A update

We have had an incredibly busy, exciting, and purposeful few weeks. From turning everyday rubbish into runway fashion to celebrating our wonderfully diverse school family, our young learners have been finding out how to care for our planet and each other.
Here is a look at what we’ve been up to!

Year 1 Takes the Runway: Our Great Trashion Show!
As part of our learning this term, Year 1 has been looking at how to look after our world. We learnt about pollution and the impact it has on our beautiful oceans. The children were really moved to hear how plastic and rubbish can hurt the fish, turtles, and other marine life. They decided they wanted to do something to help!
To bring this learning to life, we hosted our very own Year 1 Trashion Show.
The children became eco-designers, bringing in clean rubbish from home and transforming it into high-fashion outfits and stunning jewellery.
The Outfits: We saw brilliant capes made from bubble wrap, colourful skirts crafted from old newspapers, and even some jet packs made from bottles!
The Jewellery: Plastic bottle tops were turned into bright necklaces, and old newspapers were woven into sparkly bracelets.
Everyone walked on to stage and down our catwalk with giant smiles, showing off their hard work and reminding us all how important it is to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Celebrating Who We Are: Cultural Celebration Day
In St Julians Primary, we are incredibly lucky to have friends from so many different backgrounds. We spent a very special day celebrating everything that makes us unique during our Cultural Celebration Day.
What we discovered together:
Traditional Clothing: Our classrooms were a sea of beautiful colours! Lots of children came to school wearing magnificent traditional clothing from their family heritages, whilst others wore the colours of flags that mean something special to them.
Languages: We discovered all the different languages spoken by the children in our year group. It was fantastic to hear everyone share greetings in their home languages, proudly teaching their friends how to say “hello”!
It was a wonderful reminder of how our differences make our school such a rich, friendly, and exciting place to learn.

A Deep-Sea Adventure: Bristol Aquarium
To tie all of our learning together, Year 1 went on an exciting school trip to the Bristol Aquarium!
After learning so much in class about marine pollution, getting to see these incredible creatures up close was magical. The children walked through the special underwater tunnel, spotting tropical fish, clever rays, and even sharks swimming right over their heads!
The trip really helped us understand why it is so important to protect our seas. The children came back to school more excited than ever to be real eco-experts.

A Huge Thank You!
We want to say a massive thank you to all our parents and carers for your amazing support this term—whether it was saving plastic milk bottles, helping your child get ready for Culture Day, or coming along to our Trashion show. We couldn’t do it without you! Have a lovely half term!
