🍂 Year 4 Autumn Term – A Fantastic First Half Term! 🍂
What a busy and exciting start to the school year it’s been for Year 4! Over the past few weeks, we’ve immersed ourselves in history, creativity, science, and so much more. Here’s a look back at some of the wonderful learning adventures we’ve shared this half term.
🏰 Discover and Do – Stepping Back into Tudor Times
Our Autumn theme began with an exciting “Discover and Do” day where we travelled back to Tudor times! We tasted traditional pottage, dressed up in Tudor clothing, and explored real and replica artefacts to help us understand what life was like over 500 years ago. It was a fantastic hands-on way to kick off our topic.
👑 Altrudrama – A Royal Hook
To bring our Tudor learning to life, we took part in an immersive Altrudrama session all about King Henry VIII. We acted out key moments from his fascinating life and explored the dramatic events that shaped his reign. It really helped us step into the shoes of people from the past.
🪙 Royal Mint Live Lesson
We tuned in to a live lesson from The Royal Mint, learning how coins have changed over time and discovering the history behind Tudor currency. We learnt about the latin inscriptions that can still be seen on coins today and tried to find the oldest coin in the school! This inspired our own creative coin work.
🎹 Musical Moments with Mr Banks
Every week, we’ve enjoyed music lessons with Mr Banks, where we’ve been learning how to play the keyboard. We’ve been working on listening carefully, following rhythms, and playing simple tunes – and we’re already becoming more confident musicians.
✍️ A Visit from Poet Alex Wharton
One of the highlights of the term was a live poetry lesson with author and poet Alex Wharton. He shared how he uses imaginative vocabulary to create exciting poems, inspiring us to be creative in our own writing.
🎨 Creative Theme Lessons
Our Tudor topic has continued through a range of creative activities. We’ve:
- Designed striking Henry VIII collages
- Made persuasive posters, looking for Henry VIII’s next wife
- Plotted a Tudor timeline
- Created our own clay coins with accurate latin inscriptions
- Researched and written factfiles on Henry VIII
🫁 Super Scientists
In Science, we’ve been learning all about the role of the organs in the human body. We’ve shown great independence by presenting our learning in different ways and exploring what happens to our bodies when we exercise, by doing circuits in P.E.
🌾 Harvest Festival Celebrations
This year’s Harvest Festival was a real treat. We rewrote the words to a famous Shania Twain song and made it all about fruits and vegetables! We also created detailed observational sketches of fruits and vegetables. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the season and think about giving thanks.
📚 Literacy Adventures
In Literacy, we’ve been inspired by The Dreamgiver. We’ve worked hard to use amazing adjectives and descriptive language to write our own imaginative narratives. The results were magical!
➕ Maths Outdoors
In Maths, we’ve explored area and perimeter and taken our learning outside with practical measuring activities. Using our school grounds helped us understand how these concepts work in real life.
🎭 Our Tudor Class Assembly
To finish the half term, we proudly presented our class assembly on Henry VIII. We shared everything we’ve learned about the Tudors and even reenacted key moments from the life of King Henry VIII. It was a brilliant way to celebrate our learning!
We’re so proud of everything Year 4 has achieved this half term. The children have shown curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm in all they’ve done. We can’t wait to see what exciting learning adventures await us after the break!
✨ Well done, Year 4! ✨
