This half term the Year 4 children have been learning about the RNLI. We visited the lifeboat station and museum in Porthcawl where the children found out about the history of the organisation and the amazing work that the RNLI do saving lives at sea. They took part in a brilliant live session with Mr Renshaw from the RNLI learning about how to be safe near water. We also joined the Exploring our Wild Isles: Marine and Freshwater Live Lesson. We found out about different marine and freshwater habitats and the amazing animals that live in them.

In Literacy this half term the children became accomplished authors and editors, producing a narrative to accompany the wordless book ‘Flotsam’.  They worked collaboratively to type their narrative onto a Slide Presentation on Google Classroom. They then went on to create their own poems and playscripts, whilst studying the Iron Man. Finishing off the term by designing their own imaginary creature, inspired by the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon. We also had the opportunity to learn a little more about Spain, life in a Spanish school and some Spanish phrases, from our special Spanish visitors.

During our Maths lessons, the children have developed their ability to work with shapes and measures. We read a recipe and measured accurately in grams to make our very own delicious beach themed cupcakes! We worked hard to create 3d shapes using spaghetti and salt dough. Working together we created a cube and a square based pyramid. We also worked to cost holidays, calculate percentages and work out reductions in prices. This will be very useful in the future!

Excellent Electricity has been our topic for Science and STEM.  We have explored and experimented with circuit components and made our own circuits.  We predicted which circuits would work, which wouldn’t and can explain why.  As part of our Literacy lessons we read and watched ‘Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes.  This led us to investigate how we could make Iron Man’s eyes and nose light up.  The children were able to draw on their knowledge of circuits and problem-solve their way to success.  They even added a buzzer to make him talk!

We have had a really creative half term. This included weaving and producing our own fibre artwork to represent the ocean. The children took part in the SJPS Creative Festival in which each class prepared a piece to represent British Music and performed it to the school and parents.  It was such a fun day!

Luckily, we had a beautiful day for our Y4 Sports Day and everyone took part with enthusiasm. The children enjoyed cheering their friends on, showing off their athletic talents and encouraging their parents to take part in the Javelin event at the end.

To end the term, we have wound down with some fun outdoors activities.  The children used Sphero programmable robots to ‘drive’ K’nex rescue rafts that they designed and built. It has been such a fantastic year.  A huge well done to all of these wonderful children!  Have a fabulous summer holiday.
