Year 6 Medical Mavericks Workshop

This week, Year 6 took part in an amazing Medical Mavericks workshop. It was linked to our inquiry question, “What will our future look like?” and helped us learn about careers in the NHS. We were really excited because we were going to use real medical equipment and find out what it is like to work in healthcare.

“One of the first activities we tried was using a blood pressure monitor. We were surprised to see how quickly it measured how hard our hearts were working. We also used an ECG monitor, which showed the electrical activity of the heart. It looked a bit like the machines you see in hospitals on television!” – Lilyrae

“An activity I really enjoyed was using an ultrasound scanner. It was fascinating to learn how sound waves can be used to create images inside the body. I had no idea that technology could help doctors see what is happening without having to perform an operation.” – KJ

“One of the most memorable parts of the workshop was taking blood from “Andy”, the practice arm. At first, I was nervous, but it helped me understand how skilled healthcare professionals need to be. ” – Theo

“We also learned about different eye diseases and how specialists help people to protect their eyesight.” – Olivia

“My favourite activity was definitely keyhole surgery. It was much harder than it looked! I had to use special tools to move objects while watching a screen. It made me realise how much concentration and practise surgeons need. ” – Jacob

We also used a pulse monitor to see how our heart rate changed, especially after moving around.

The workshop introduced us to lots of different NHS careers. Before this day, we mostly knew about doctors and nurses, but now we know there are many other jobs, such as sonographers, surgeons, healthcare scientists and technicians.

This experience really made us think about our inquiry question: What will our future look like? We think healthcare will become even more advanced as technology improves. Who knows? Maybe one day lots of us will have a career in the NHS!
