Year 4 Blog – Rolling on a River!
This term, our Year 4 class has had an amazing time exploring our exciting topic, Rolling on a River. We have become river experts and have enjoyed lots of hands-on learning both in and out of the classroom.
We started by learning about the different features of a river, including the source, meander, tributary and mouth. We then visited our local river, where we carefully sketched the landscape from a viewing point, paying close attention to the natural features we could see. Back in school, we used our creativity to make fantastic river dioramas, bringing everything we had learnt to life.

In Science, we explored food chains and discovered how plants and animals depend on each other to survive in river habitats. We also learnt about the life cycles of fish, finding out how they grow and change throughout their lives.
One of the highlights of the term was our exciting trip to Cilfynydd. We had a wonderful time pond dipping, where we were thrilled to catch lots of newts and other fascinating pond creatures. We also completed an experiment to investigate why salt stays in the sea, helping us understand the water cycle and evaporation. During a fun team-building challenge, we worked together to learn how water flows down mountains and into rivers, discovering how rivers are formed and how water travels through the landscape.

In Geography, we compared the lengths of rivers across the UK and around the world. We were amazed by just how long some rivers are! We also used atlases to trace the paths of rivers across Wales, improving both our map-reading skills and our knowledge of Welsh geography.
Our STEM learning focused on electricity. We learnt how electricity is generated and explored the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources. We investigated what makes a circuit work by building our own electrical circuits and testing different materials. We discovered which materials are conductors, allowing electricity to pass through, and which are insulators, blocking the flow of electricity.
PE has been packed with exciting opportunities too. We thoroughly enjoyed coaching sessions from County in the Community and Cricket Wales, where we developed new skills, worked as part of a team and, most importantly, had lots of fun!
It has also been a very busy term with whole-school events. We loved taking part in Sports Day, celebrating Healthy Living Day, and showing our creativity during the Creative Festival. These special events gave us the chance to challenge ourselves, work together and celebrate our achievements.

What a fantastic term it has been! We have learnt so much, enjoyed memorable experiences and created wonderful memories together. We can’t wait to see what exciting adventures Year 4 will have next!
