Year 5 – Summer A Update

This term has flown by. Our theme, “Cracking Ideas,” launched our pupils into the dynamic world of entrepreneurship. They’ve explored what it takes to start and run a business, from brainstorming innovative ideas to developing business plans and preparing to pitch their products to the Dragons in the hopes of securing investment. The best is yet to come as children busily prepare for the eco festival after half term. Our budding entrepreneurs have already shown remarkable creativity, confidence, and teamwork, and we can’t wait for them to put it all into practice in a couple of weeks!

In a thought-provoking enquiry, pupils investigated the real and relevant issue of food waste within our school. After collecting data and exploring solutions, they created impactful infographics to present their findings and raise awareness in our school community. To deepen their understanding further, children also took part in a fascinating Chartwells Food Waste Workshop, where they explored the environmental impact of wasted food and discovered practical ways to reduce waste both at school and at home.

As part of our Earth Day learning, pupils joined a live Scholastic event with Judy Wise, author of Wild Footprints. The inspiring session encouraged children to think carefully about the world around them and the importance of protecting our planet. Following the event, pupils calculated their own carbon footprints and reflected on the small changes they could make to live more sustainably.

We were also incredibly fortunate to take part in video calls with Lord de Clifford through the “Learn with the Lords” programme. These engaging sessions gave children a valuable insight into the work of the House of Lords and helped them develop their understanding of democracy, leadership, and how laws are discussed and debated in the UK.

We’ve also tried to find the sunny days and get outside and practise for our sports day events. The children have been enthusiastically sprinting, skipping, jumping, and throwing javelins as they prepare for our exciting summer sports event. It’s been wonderful to see their energy, effort, and team spirit shine through in every session!

To round off a jam-packed term, we also welcomed the fire service into school for a fire safety talk. This engaging session provided children with essential knowledge on how to stay safe in emergencies.

We cannot wait to see what next term has in store!
